This conversation brings together kindred animators of color who have brought a whimsical, intimate and alive quality to their practice. Using hand and computer drawings, models and puppets, these storytellers explore themes of identity, self exploration and healing in their work.

From Ayoka Chenzira’s Hair Piece: A Film for Nappyheaded People (1984), Carrie Hawks’ black enuf* (2016) and Iyabo Kwayana’s By Water (2022), their works represent tender and visually compelling ways to tell personal and culturally relevant stories. They will also discuss the collaborative process of animation and the particularities of this form to wider filmmaking craft.
